Montecarlo

The Community of Montecarlo is in the province of Lucca and its territory extends approximately 1500 hectares, inhabited by approximately 4000 inhabitants.

The historic Center, well-preserved and still surrounded by the splendid surrounding wall, the village di Montecarlo rises from an isolated hill at 160 meters above sea-level on the ridge separating the Valdinievole from the Piana di Lucca. It was built at the beginning of the 14th century to shelter the inhabitants of the Community of Vivinaia, after the destruction of their site. The history of the hamlet is inseparably interwoven with that of its wine; this destiny is found in the meaning of the its former name Vivinaia, or Via del Vino (Wine Road), which crosses the hills of Montecarlo.
